Georgia LB Adam Anderson charged with rape; booked into Clarke County Jail after voluntarily surrendering
Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson is facing a felony rape charge in connection to an alleged early morning incident that occurred in Athens on Oct. 29.
Anderson voluntarily surrendered Wednesday evening to the Clarke County (Georgia) Sheriff’s Office, according to his his attorney Steve Sadow.
He was booked into the Clarke County Jail at 7:45 p.m, according the online booking report. He was being held without bond.
"The Athletic Association has no additional comment as it is an ongoing legal and University disciplinary matter," a UGA athletics spokesperson told the Athens Banner-Herald on Wednesday night via email.
Anderson was suspended from the football team last week while Athens-Clarke County police investigated the allegations brought by a 21-year-old female, who said she went to an Athens residence after having drinks. She told police she awoke with Anderson penetrating her without consent while she was lying in bed.
The University of Georgia’s Equal Opportunity Office met with Anderson and Sadow last week, according to Sadow.
Anderson is denying any allegation of sexual misconduct. The woman reported the incident to police the same afternoon of the incident.
“Adam is innocent of the charge brought against him and intends to vigorously defend himself in court,” Sadow said. “He will seek release on bond. Once again, Adam hopes and prays that the UGA community and the public keep an open mind and afford him the presumption of innocence that the law demands."
Anderson missed Georgia’s 43-6 win over Missouri last Saturday.
The senior from Rome, Georgia, who was considered a possible first-round NFL draft pick, leads the Bulldogs in sacks with 5 and is fifth with 32 tackles. He had 6½ sacks last season.
