Final Four women's preview: Maryland vs. Connecticut
No. 1 Maryland (34-2) vs. No. 1 Connecticut (36-1)
Time: 9 p.m. Sunday, ESPN
Why Maryland will win: Young, but with a 2014 Final Four on their resumes, the Terps are an unusual mix of interior and exterior prowess, and they possess four players – led by Laurin Mincy (13.8) – that average at least 13 points per game. Among the national leaders is several offensive categories as a team, Maryland is UConn-like in multiple ways.
Why UConn will win: Because that's what the Huskies do in the Final Four. Two-time defending national champions and with a 42-point margin of victory on average entering the NCAA tournament, they are led by All-Americans in Moriah Jefferson (12.3 points per game), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (15.2) and Breanna Stewart (17.6, 7.6 rebounds per game) and are heavy favorites to cut the nets again, leading the nation averaging 90.2 points per game. Stewart on Saturday was named winner of the Wade Tropy given by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to the player of the year. Connecticut also completed a three-peat in 2002-04.
History lesson: UConn coach Geno Auriemma can tie UCLA men's coaching legend John Wooden with a 10th national championship.
