Sun Belt, American Cancer Society team up to support Appalachian State coach
In support of cancer-stricken Appalachian State women's basketball coach Angel Elderkin, the Sun Belt Conference has partnered with the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer for a "Suit and Sneakers" week at the end of the month (Jan. 26-28).
Players will wear black and peach colored shirts during the week for warm-ups, while coaches will sport suits and sneakers with peach-themed ribbons.
The league also plans to raise funds for the ACS by pledging donations for every three-pointer made by teams in the month of February.
Elderkin was first diagnosed with endometrial cancer in May of last year, and she coached Mountaineers through the preseason and into the start of the regular season while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Elderkin won the USBWA Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award and will be honored at the women’s Final Four in Dallas this April.
