South Carolina storms back to beat Stanford in battle of women's basketball's top two teams

An extra five minutes was required to determine a victor between the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks and No. 2 Stanford Cardinal on Sunday.

In the end, No. 1 remained on top.

Aaliyah Boston (14 points, 13 rebounds) tied the game with 2.1 seconds left and the Gamecocks surged in overtime for a 76-71 road victory. South Carolina trailed by 10 after the first quarter but outscored the Cardinal by 10 in the fourth.

Bree Hall had a career-high 12 points, including a late three-pointer in overtime, off the bench for the Gamecocks. Stanford's Cameron Brink led all scorers with 25 points and added four blocks on the defensive end.

South Carolina trailed by four points with less than 20 seconds remaining when Brea Hall made it a one-point game with a three with 14.9 seconds left. A foul and a missed free throw later, Boston took advantage of her opportunity to tie the game.

Stanford's 22 turnovers proved costly compared to South Carolina's 11.

The game was similar to what took place between the two teams at South Carolina last year; Stanford blew an 18-point lead and the Gamecocks stayed undefeated. The two teams played an epic national semifinal months prior to that game, with Stanford besting South Carolina on its way to an eventual national championship.

However, Sunday marked the 16th straight win against a ranked team for South Carolina.

Both South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer both wore shirts in support of Brittney Griner, who was transferred to a Russian penal colony last week as part of her nine-year prison sentence for drug charges.
