What is Geno Auriemma's record? UConn women's basketball coach's career wins, history
Back in January, Tara VanDerveer became the Division I basketball career wins leader, men's or women's, when she picked up her 1,203rd career victory, allowing her to pass Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.
It was the latest accomplishment in a career full of them for the legendary Stanford women’s basketball coach, but ultimately, the achievement will have a short shelf life.
Ten months after usurping Krzyzewski, and seven months after her retirement, VanDerveer is set to be passed on the career wins list by a fellow college basketball coaching luminary — Geno Auriemma.
The longtime UConn women's basketball coach is currently tied with VanDerveer in career wins and can break the deadlock with her on Wednesday night when his Huskies, led by star Paige Bueckers, host Fairleigh Dickinson in a game in which they’ll be a sizable favorite.
Auriemma has been a mainstay of the sport for decades, building UConn into a colossus that has won 11 national championships and made 23 Final Fours under his watch. Now, he’s about to add another notable bullet point to an already lengthy and decorated resume.
As he’s on the doorstep of history, here’s a closer look at Auriemma’s career at UConn and some of his coaching feats:
