Two of the nation's top offenses squared off Thursday in a pivotal ACC women's basketball regular-season contest that had significant conference tournament seeding implications.

Neither team's offense disappointed, but that wasn't the biggest storyline to come out of this one.

That headline would belong to Ta'Niya Latson and No. 24 Florida State (23-6, 13-4 in ACC play), who went into Purcell Pavilion and handed Hannah Hidalgo and No. 4 Notre Dame back-to-back ACC losses for the first time since 2021.

Florida State made some program history with its first win in South Bend, Indiana. The Seminoles also have now won back-to-back road games against ranked opponents for the first time, per the ACC Network broadcast.

The loss now ties Notre Dame with NC State for first place in the ACC standings at 15-2 in conference play. The Wolfpack defeated the Irish on Feb. 23 in double-overtime thanks to lockdown defense in the final extra period.

The turning point in Thursday's game happened at the 8:26 mark of the second quarter when FSU coach Brooke Wyckoff called a timeout after Liatu King gave Notre Dame its largest lead of the night (15 points).

From that moment on, the Seminoles found their rhythm on both ends. They hit 6-of-8 3-pointers in the final eight minutes of the second quarter to head into halftime leading 44-40.

Behind Latson's 19 second-half points, FSU continued its momentum and kept throwing punches when Notre Dame would try to get back in the game. Sonia Citron and King were big for Notre Dame on the night, as they finished with 21 and 17 points, respectively.

Hidalgo struggled mightily in the second half for the Irish, though, so much so that Niele Ivey had to pull her star sophomore guard off the floor for a little in the third quarter. Hidalgo went 1-for-9 from the field in the final 20 minutes; she was 3-for-9 from the field in the first half.

Before Thursday's game, Notre Dame was shown to be the final No. 1 seed in the second top-16 ranking reveal by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. The Irish's seeding will likely take a hit going into their regular-season finale against Louisville on Sunday.

Final: FSU 86, Notre Dame 81

Florida State upsets Notre Dame

Ta'Niya Latson and Florida State pull off the 86-81 upset over Hannah Hidalgo and Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on Thursday. It's the first time Notre Dame has lost back-to-back ACC games since 2021.

Latson finished with a game-high 23 points on 7 of 20 shooting. Sonia Citron led the Irish with 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting. A tough way to start a big weekend for Notre Dame, who is now tied with NC State for first place in the ACC.

Notre Dame calls timeout

Niele Ivey calls a timeout on the floor after Sonia Citron hits a 3-pointer from the right corner to cut Notre Dame's deficit to 82-75.

Florida State holding onto lead

The Seminoles are just under five minutes away from walking out with a signature NCAA Tournament resume win as they lead the Irish 73-68 at the under-five media timeout.

Notre Dame has outscored FSU 11-6 to start the fourth quarter thanks to baskets from Liatu King and Sonia Citron, but the Seminoles keep responding with ones of their own. Makayla Timpson causing trouble all over the floor for Notre Dame's defense, as the FSU forward has 20 points and 16 rebounds on the night.

Hannah Hidalgo has yet to hit a field goal in the second half, after she was 3 for 9 from the field in the first half.

Notre Dame marching back

Here come the Irish — again.

A 8-0 run out of the end of third timeout by Sonia Citron, Olivia Miles and Liatu King has Notre Dame just down by two to FSU at 67-65. The momentum is slowly shifting back to the Irish as the Seminoles are 0 for 3 from the field to start the fourth quarter.

Hannah Hidalgo drew the foul on Mariana Valenzuela sending this one into a timeout on the floor. Hidalgo will go to the line shooting two coming out of the timeout, with an opportunity to tie the game.

Third quarter: FSU 67, Notre Dame 57

FSU takes double digit lead into fourth quarter

Notre Dame is 10 minutes away from dropping back-to-back ACC games for the first time since 2021, as Florida State leads 67-57 going into the fourth quarter. Carla Viegas pushed the Seminoles' lead to 10 just before the buzzer with her fourth 3-pointer of the game.

After taking a brief 53-52 lead at the 4:22 mark of the frame, Notre Dame's offense fell out of rhythm and went cold as the Irish did not make a field goal over the last 4:22 of the quarter. A big fourth quarter coming up for Niele Ivey's squad, who is holding onto the last No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Hannah Hidalgo heads to the bench

Niele Ivey takes Hannah Hidalgo off the court as her star guard has been showing some frustration and emotion in the third quarter, both with her self production — 0 for 4 from the field in the third quarter alone — and inconsistency with the whistle from the officials.

FSU currently leads Notre Dame 62-53 thanks to a 10-0 run over the last three minutes.

Notre Dame back on front

Sonia Citron gives Notre Dame its first lead since the second quarter with a fast break layup. She is at a team-high 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field with four rebounds and two assists.

We got ourselves a game brewing in South Bend!

Notre Dame within two of FSU

Here come the Irish!

Liatu King with a real nice underneath the basket layup to bring Notre Dame within two of FSU at 52-50, and draws the foul while getting the ball off. She has been the spark of Notre Dame's offense tonight, as she has 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting from the field at the under-five media timeout.

Maddy Westbound picks up fourth foul

A frustrating night continues for Maddy Westbound as she is called for her fourth foul of the night. She heads to the bench as Liza Karlen comes on.

Notre Dame first to score in half

Sonia Citron with a real smooth and easy layup to put Notre Dame on the board first in the second half. Irish now trail Seminoles 44-42.

If Notre Dame wants to pull out the win over FSU on Thursday, the Irish will have to get Hannah Hidalgo and Olivia Miles going as the two Notre Dame stars are a combined 5 for 15 from the field.

First half: FSU 44, Notre Dame 40

Notre Dame trails FSU at halftime

A dominant second quarter for FSU gives the Seminoles a 44-40 lead going into halftime in South Bend. After shooting 4 for 20 from the field in the first quarter, FSU shot 11 of 21 from the field in the second quarter alone — highlighted by a 6 for 8 sequence from the 3-point line.

The Seminoles defense caused quite the difficulty for the Irish in the first half, as they finished the half on a 28-11 run in the final eight minutes. It's just the second time this season that Notre Dame is trailing at halftime.

Florida State takes lead

The Seminoles have come all the way back and taken the lead thanks to two successful free throws from Ta'Niya Latson. Makayla Timpson then extends FSU's lead to three with a layup off the glass.

Quite the impressive run by FSU, which trailed by 15 points at the 8:26 mark of the second quarter. FSU leads 35-32 in the second frame.

Florida State extends run further

The Seminoles have found their way into this game with a 15-1 run over the last 3:25 of the game clock. Mariana Valenzuela hits a 3-pointer in the corner of the Notre Dame bench to cut the Seminoles deficit to one point at 30-29.

Notre Dame has not hit a field goal in well over four minutes.

Florida State responds with extended run

The Seminoles aren't going away without a fight.

Makayla Timpson and Sydney Bowles put together a 10-0 run coming out of the timeout for FSU to cut Notre Dame's lead to 29-24. Timeout on the floor called by Niele Ivey as she looks to reset her team.

FSU is 4 for 4 from the field coming out of the timeout, compared to Notre Dame's 0 for 5.

Notre Dame pushes lead to 15

Hannah Hidalgo and Liatu King extend Notre Dame's lead to 15 points with back-to-back-to-back jumpers to open up the second quarter. Florida State calls a timeout on the floor as it is trailing 29-14.

It's a 14-3 Notre Dame run. All momentum on the Irish here as the Seminoles can't find rhythm on offense, especially on a night that Ta'Niya Latson is 1 of 7 from the field in her first game back.

First quarter: Notre Dame 23, FSU 14

Notre Dame finishes first quarter strong

The Irish close out the first quarter strong on both ends of the floor but specifically on the defense end, as the Seminoles go 2-for-10 from the field following the under-four media timeout.

Olivia Miles had a big time assist at the 1:53 mark of the first quarter when she found Sonia Citron open for a 3-pointer, which sparked a 7-3 run to end the frame for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame holding onto four point lead

With two fast-paced offenses facing each other, both teams are continuing to settle in and establish their offenses. The Irish lead the Seminoles 11-7 at the first under-five media timeout of the evening, with Westbeld scoring five of Notre Dame's nine points.

Hannah Hidalgo is doing Hannah Hidalgo things early on as she is impacting the game in all facets: four points, two rebounds and a steal. Notre Dame is shooting 44% from the field, compared to FSU's 20%.

Notre Dame is on the board

The Irish are the first to score as Maddy Westbeld takes advantage of a great wide-open look and drains a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Notre Dame vs Florida state predictions, picks

Peter Holland Jr., Tallahassee Democrat: Notre Dame 84, FSU 72

"This game obviously depends on the availability of Latson and Gordon. Regardless, this game could be overwhelming for the Seminoles because of the firepower Notre Dame has led by Hidalgo and the crew. After coming off a double-overtime defeat, the Fighting Irish will look to a strong start, shooting-wise, and the Seminoles will be put in a tough situation where they have to play catchup the ball the whole game."
