Broncos weather another meltdown to top Chiefs

DENVER — Breaking down the Broncos 24-17 win over the Chiefs.

What happened: For the second week in a row, the Broncos survived a second-half meltdown to hold for a win, this time 24-17 against the Kansas City Chiefs. For the Broncos, who are alone in first-place in the AFC West, there were moments that were both brilliant and baffling. Quarterback Peyton Manning threw three touchdowns in the first half, but then saw other drives fizzle out quickly thanks to penalties, drops and blown plays. The Chiefs got 77 rushing yards from backup running back Knile Davis and 81 receiving yards from tight end Travis Kelce in cutting Denver's lead to 21-17 late in the fourth quarter. The Broncos thought they had escaped after strip-sacking Alex Smith, but the play was ruled an incomplete pass, and Denver needed a goal-line stand to secure the win.

What we'll be talking about: The Broncos' retooled defense didn't look so ferocious Sunday, especially in critical third-down situations. The Chiefs converted 10-of-16 third downs, including 6-of-9 in the second half, despite playing most of the game without their best offensive player, Jamaal Charles, who left the game early in the first quarter with an ankle injury. The Broncos might still be in first place in the AFC West, but they hardly looked like the AFC's best team. It might have been enough Sunday against the depleted Chiefs, but it shouldn't be next week in Seattle.

What's next: The Broncos biggest test of the regular season comes next week with a Super Bowl rematch at Seattle. The Broncos have at times this season looked like an improved team than the one that got blown out in February, but this is their true chance to prove it. The Chiefs meanwhile will to get their first win on the road at Miami.
