Roger Goodell to meet with DeMaurice Smith on Tuesday
Amid rising tensions over the NFL's handling of personal conduct issues, Commissioner Roger Goodell and the head of the players union will be face to face Tuesday morning.
Goodell and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith are expected to attend a previously scheduled meeting in New York, where the personal conduct policy is to be discussed, a person with knowledge of the plan told Paste BN Sports on Monday night.
Some players and likely some owners also are expected to attend the meeting, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.
It'll be the fourth known meeting and the third with the leaders of both sides present since Goodell's Sept. 19 media conference, during which he announced changes will be made to the personal conduct policy in light of his mishandling of the Ray Rice domestic violence case.
The NFLPA has asked for collective bargaining of the new policy and proposed neutral arbitration on all conduct matters. The NFL, which hasn't responded to the union's proposal, believes it can institute changes unilaterally, though players' input is welcome, and Goodell has said owners want him to maintain authority over matters involving the integrity of the league.
Tuesday's meeting comes one week after Goodell's decision to suspend Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson for at least the rest of this season became a focal point in the broader fight over how to address personal conduct.
Peterson and the union declined to attend a hearing the league scheduled Nov. 14 because of what they said were unanswered questions about the role of outside experts. Peterson has appealed and has a hearing scheduled Dec. 2 in front of appeals officer Harold Henderson.
Goodell was at the Buffalo Bills-New York Jets game Monday night in Detroit and did a brief interview with CBS, but wasn't asked any questions about Peterson or other substantive issues.
