The antiquated Los Angeles Coliseum was a major factor why Southern California lost one of its NFL teams two decades ago.

Now, the Coliseum will be the temporary home of the Los Angeles Rams and potentially the San Diego Chargers next season, according to published reports. NFL owners approved the Rams’ relocation from St. Louis on Tuesday, although the the new domed stadium in Inglewood won’t be ready until 2019.

The Chargers were given a 1-year option to join the Rams in Los Angeles.

USC is currently the lone tenant at the nearly century-old stadium that has hosted two Summer Olympics. (The Oakland Raiders were the last NFL team to call the stadium home.) Under teams of its lease, only one NFL team is supposed to be allowed to call the Coliseum home on a temporary basis, but Sports Business Journal reported that USC has agreed to allow two teams to host games there.

USC, the Rams and Chargers --- along with UCLA --- have all called the Coliseum home at the same time. That was in 1960 before the Chargers left for San Diego the following season. The Coliseum was the site of the first Super Bowl in 1967.

The Rams and potentially Chargers calling the Coliseum home for three seasons will help fund a nearly $300 million planned renovation.
