Check back throughout the day for all of the latest quick hits:

Romo to undergo back tests, short-term IR an option

As QB Tony Romo recovers from a broken bone in his back, the Dallas Cowboys are mulling whether to keep him on the active roster or send him to injured reserve with an expected midseason return.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday that Romo would undergo more tests on his back before the team would make a decision. Romo suffered a broken bone in his back on Aug. 26 in the Cowboys' third preseason game after taking a hit from Seattle Seahawks DE Cliff Avril.

“We’re going to continue to gather information here in the next couple days on Tony and just see what his status is,” Garrett said in a press conference Monday. “Currently he’s on the 53-man roster. We’ll get some more information here over the next 48 hours and make a determination as to what his status will be going forward.”

If Romo is placed on injured reserve, he would have to miss eight weeks before he would be eligible to play again. Rookie Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick from Mississippi State, is slated to start while Romo is out, with Mark Sanchez serving as the backup.

Vikings not naming starter yet

Sam Bradford might be the Minnesota Vikings' eventual answer at QB, but coach Mike Zimmer is holding off on naming a starter for now.

The Vikings acquired Bradford via a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, but Shaun Hill is still in the running to start Week 1 after Teddy Bridgewater was lost for the season with a knee injury.

"It's hard to explain exactly what it would be," Zimmer said, according to ESPN, when asked what he was looking to see from Bradford in order to name the QB his starter. "Command of the offense. Understanding what we're doing. Know where to go with the ball. Know the checks."

Edwards, Rankins to IR

Both Oakland Raiders defensive end Mario Edwards (hip) and New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins (fibula) were placed on injured reserve, ruling them out for the first eight games.

Edwards was expected to be a key contributor to the Raiders' defense and the starter opposite Khalil Mack. Rankins was the No. 12 overall pick and was pegged to be a key contributor along the Saints' line.

Ravens bring Forsett back

RB Justin Forsett re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, just two days after he was a surprise release by the team.

Forsett, 30, led the Ravens in rushing the last two seasons and ran for 1,266 yards in 2014.

Charles might miss Week 1

The Kansas City Chiefs could be without RB Jamaal Charles in Week 1 as he recovers from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered last season, with Chiefs coach Andy Reid calling him a "stretch" to play.

"Jamaal has to keep working through this," Reid said. "We'll see how it goes."

Spencer Ware is Charles' primary backup, with Charcandrick West also figuring into the rotation.

Foster to start for 'Fins

Arian Foster is the Dolphins' Week 1 starter at running back ahead of Jay Ajayi.

"Arian, from the time he's gotten here, has really shown that's the right spot for him to be in," Dolphins coach Adam Gase said Monday.

Foster, 30, is a four-time Pro Bowl selection, but he has missed 23 games in the last three seasons, including 12 last year.

Watt expected back in action

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt looks to be ready to play in Week 1 after undergoing offseason back surgery.

"I would say that he'll play," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said Monday.

Nelson looks ready to return

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson is a "full-go" in practices and is expected to play Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, coach Mike McCarthy said Monday.

Nelson is recovering from a torn ACL last season and had a "hiccup" in his knee that sidelined him for the early portion of training camp.

Bosa sits out

Defensive end Joey Bosa sat out practice for the San Diego Chargers, as the No. 3 overall pick still has yet to practice in pads after a prolonged holdout.

"He was a little tight, so we held him out today," coach Mike McCoy told reporters Monday. "We'll take it one day at a time."
