Cutler cleared for return

The Chicago Bears are getting Jay Cutler back in their moment of need.

The veteran quarterback was cleared to return after sitting out with a thumb injury, coach John Fox announced Monday.

Brian Hoyer had been Cutler's replacement, but he suffered a broken arm in last Thursday's loss to the Green Bay Packers. Fox said Hoyer underwent successful surgery and likely would be placed on injured reserve.

Chicago faces the Minnesota Vikings next Monday.

Texans tackle suffers gruesome injury

Houston right tackle Derek Newton tore both patellar tendons on the same play Monday night in Denver, according to NFL Network.

Even rehabbing one of the knee tendons can threaten a career, as evidenced by the tribulations of Giants wideout Victor Cruz.

Niners not shopping Staley

Just as the Browns claim to be holding onto left tackle Joe Thomas, the San Francisco 49ers are apparently not going to trade their own blind side blocker, Joe Staley.

“No one’s ever talked, had any discussions with me about Joe being traded," coach Chip Kelly said Monday. "We need Joe here."

Report: Coleman to miss game

Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman will miss the team's Week 8 game with a hamstring injury, per ESPN.

Coleman left Sunday's loss to the San Diego Chargers after suffering the injury. He leads the Falcons with six touchdowns.

Trent Williams OK

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden says an MRI shows that left tackle Trent Williams’ left knee is “structurally OK.”

Speaking to reporters Monday, Gruden called the information about his Pro Bowl offensive lineman “good news”, but added that Williams will need to be monitored during the week.

Williams left Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Detroit Lions after injuring his knee.

Jackson insists no Thomas trade

Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson doesn't want to leave any ambiguity about his plans for offensive tackle Joe Thomas.

"We are not going to trade Joe Thomas," Jackson said Monday.

Thomas had been the subject of trade speculation, as several NFL contenders have a need at the position with the Nov. 1 deadline approaching.

Redskins TE Reed cleared

Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed has been cleared to return to action, coach Jay Gruden said Monday. Gruden added he was unsure whether Reed would play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals in London.

Reed said he knew he suffered a concussion in Week 5 but hid it from the team to finish out the game.

Cardinals WR suffers torn ACL

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Jaron Brown is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, coach Bruce Arians confirmed Monday.

Arians added that he believed wide receiver Michael Floyd (hamstring) would be able to play in Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers.

Packers take another hit in secondary

Green Bay Packers cornerback Damarious Randall underwent groin surgery and will likely be sidelined for four to six weeks, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Randall missed last Thursday's win over the Chicago Bears after aggravating the injury the previous week.

The Packers are now without their top two cornerbacks for the foreseeable future, as Sam Shields was placed on injured reserve last week with a concussion.

Green Bay faces the Atlanta Falcons and their top-ranked passing offense next week on the road.

Eagles lose DB

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Ron Brooks ruptured his right quad tendon and will miss the remainder of the season, coach Doug Pederson announced Monday.

Brooks had started five of six games for the Eagles and was a valuable presence in the slot.

The Eagles face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
