Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick was named the NFL Players Association's Week 1 Community MVP on Friday despite not being on an NFL roster or collecting a salary.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback was honored for "empowering underserved communities through donations and grassroots outreach." That included $100,000 in donations on Sept. 7, when Kaepernick provided $25,000 to four different charities, including: The inner-city youth group DREAM; Coalition for the Homeless, a group that addresses child incarceration; The Gathering for Justice's War on Children, and an equality group for immigrant youth, United We Dream.

The NFLPA also praised Kaepernick for his efforts in a back-to-school backpack giveaway last week.

Kaepernick hasn’t been signed following a season in which he drew national headlines for kneeling during the national anthem as a way to advocate against racial injustice. He pledged last September to donate $1 million of his salary to 24 different organizations. According to his foundation's web site, $900,000 has been donated.
