San Francisco 49ers release veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman

The San Francisco 49ers on Friday released veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman, one of the final players remaining from the franchise’s team that played in Super Bowl XLVII.
Bowman, 29, is a four-time All-Pro, including in 2015, but saw his playing time decrease recently. He missed the entire 2014 season while recovering from a devastating knee injury suffered in the 2013 NFC Championship Game. He suffered a torn Achilles tendon last October.
49ers general manager John Lynch said in a statement Friday that he and head coach Kyle Shanahan met with Bowman on Thursday and both sides agreed it was time to part. The 49ers were unable to find a trade partner, which is unsurprising given Bowman’s age, injury history and salary ($6.75 million this year, with a cap hit of $12 million next season).
