Jets sign Chris Hogan to provide depth to thin wide receiver group

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are bringing in veteran receiver Chris Hogan to bolster their thin wide receiver ranks.

Hogan agreed to terms with the Jets on Sunday, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The person requested anonymity because the deal has not been announced. NFL Network first reported the agreement.

It's a homecoming for Hogan, a Wyckoff, New Jersey, native who played high school football at Ramapo and also played for Monmouth. And it will help the Jets, who are already down two key receivers as Vyncint Smith (core injury) rookie Denzel Mims (hamstring) are both unable to practice.

"Obviously, we’re a little thin right now. We’ve got two guys that aren’t practicing," Jets coach Adam Gase said Sunday. "[Hogan] is somebody whose name has come up quite a bit around here when we were talking about guys to add and he’s a guy that’s going to be able to come in here and pick up the offense very quickly — it’s going to be familiar as far as a lot of things that he’s done in the past. We’ve obviously competed against him quite a bit. We just feel like he’s a good fit for us.

Mims hurt his hamstring before the first practice and Smith suffered a core injury during Friday's practice and will visit with a specialist soon.

Hogan, who won two Super Bowls with the Patriots, gives the Jets some much-needed depth and experience. However, Hogan is coming off a difficult year with the Panthers: he had only eight catches for 68 yards on seven catches. He also has played with the Buffalo Bills.
