Patrick Mahomes has had a better career start than Michael Jordan, Chiefs CEO says
This Sunday will be Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' second straight Super Bowl appearance since becoming the starter in 2018, and his CEO is already comparing him to a sports icon.
"It's amazing the success that Patrick has had so early in his career," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt told 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City on Wednesday.
"I mean really more so than Michael Jordan had early in his career. It took Michael a few years before he won his first championship and Patrick, in year one, had us on the cusp of making the Super Bowl," We're just blessed to have him and it's gonna be a fun 10-plus year career for Patrick in Kansas City."
Mahomes' success at 25 years old has caught Hunt by surprise. Hunt added that the team's front office expected Mahomes to take some time to develop, not already be a league MVP and Super Bowl champion after he was drafted in the first round in 2017.
In terms of accomplishments four years into their careers, Mahomes has been a Super Bowl MVP, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and is 6-1 in the postseason. He has also thrown for 114 touchdowns (a single-season record 50 in 2018) and 14,152 yards in his career in the regular season.
While he won NBA Rookie of The Year and league MVP in his fourth year, Jordan didn't win a title until his seventh year in the NBA. Jordan, who was an All-Star in each of those years, led the league in scoring in his third and fourth seasons.
Hunt also has confidence Mahomes will add to his legacy and outduel six-time Super champion Tom Brady in Super Bowl 55.
When asked for a prediction for the Super Bowl, Hunt said, "I do know which team is going to end up on top, and it's the one with the young quarterback."
