USFL announces first four head coach hires: Todd Haley, Mike Riley, Bart Andrus, Kevin Sumlin

The USFL is on its way back to the football field. The league is scheduled to return in April.

On Thursday, the league announced its first four head coaches: Todd Haley (Tampa Bay Bandits), Mike Riley (New Jersey Generals), Kevin Sumlin (Houston Gamblers) and Bart Andrus (Philadelphia Stars). 

Andrus has a long and varied football resume.

Mike Riley has been head coach of the San Diego Chargers, and has also been head coach at Oregon State and Nebraska.

Todd Haley was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009-11, the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals from 2007-08, Pittsburgh Steelers from 2012-17, and Cleveland Browns in 2018, but he was fired in Week 8 of his first season with the team. He also served as a wide receivers coach for the New York Jets, Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys. 

Finally, Kevin Sumlin was the head football coach at the University of Houston from 2008-11, Texas A&M University from 2012-17, and at the University of Arizona from 2018-20.

One other familiar name, former Iowa State and Auburn head coach Gene Chizik, weighed in that he has spoken with the league and that there is interest on both sides.

The reimagined USFL is set to kick off in April with eight franchises: Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers, Tampa Bay Bandits, New Jersey Generals, Michigan Panthers, Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers. All games will be played in Birmingham.
