Every year at the NFL scouting combine, one of the main storylines to watch is the potential for the 40-yard dash record to be broken.

Washington wide receiver John Ross set the current benchmark back in 2017 at 4.22 seconds. Just before the defensive backs took the field Sunday at this year’s event at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah predicted that Baylor’s Kalon Barnes could take the record for himself.

Barnes came so close, turning in an official time of 4.23 seconds, the second-fastest 40-yard dash in combine history. It was the fastest time at this year's combine and the fastest ever by a defensive back.

Shortly after Barnes' run, another threatened the record but came up just short. Tariq Woolen of Texas-San Antonio ran an official time of 4.26 seconds, tied for the fourth-fastest time in combine history.
