The Eagles placed defensive end Derek Barnett on injured reserve after he suffered a torn ACL in the 38-35 season-opening win over the Lions.

Barnett played 12 snaps before injuring his knee in the third quarter. He entered the 2022 season as a key rotational piece along the defensive line. Barnett appeared in 65 games (45 starts) with the organization.

Last season, Barnett recorded a career-high 46 tackles, 11 quarterback hits and two sacks.

"Obviously, that's a big blow for us," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters. "I love the way that Derek Barnett comes to work single every day and plays with grittiness and toughness and nasty. I am a huge Derek Barnett fan, and he'll be missed."

The Eagles re-signed Barnett to a two-year deal this offseason. Barnett, a former first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has 21.5 career sacks with the organization.

On Tuesday, Philadelphia signed defensive end Janarius Robinson off the Vikings’ practice squad as a roster replacement. The Eagles plan to rely on their roster depth to fill the void.

One name to watch is second-year defensive end Tarron Jackson. Sirianni expressed that Jackson is ready for the opportunity.

"We talk to our guys a lot about that, about their roles and how if you're a backup you are one snap away from going in," Sirianni said. "That's the way it's going to play out for Tarron."

The Eagles will work in Jackson alongside teammates Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat on edge. The interior still remains a strength with veterans Fletcher Cox and Javon Hargrove entrenched as starters.
