New Orleans is ready to welcome the NFL, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles facing off in Super Bowl 59 at the city's iconic Caesars Superdome on Sunday, Feb. 9.

No stadium has ever hosted the Super Bowl as often as the Superdome over the years, and two of the strongest teams in the NFL in recent seasons will converge on the Big Easy. For Kansas City, it's an opportunity to be the first team to "three-peat" in the Super Bowl era, while Philadelphia will be looking to avenge a 38-35 loss in Super Bowl 57.

Still, winter weather can be a massive variable for any event. New Orleans might offer warmer temperatures to go with the party atmosphere on Bourbon Street, but there's only one way to guarantee pristine conditions for the Super Bowl: a stadium with a roof.

Does Caesars Superdome fit the bill? Here's what to know about the host stadium for Super Bowl 59:

Caesars Superdome: Is Super Bowl 59 venue covered?

Super Bowl 59 will be played under a roof, as Caesars Superdome is an enclosed stadium. That means a covered playing surface, which means the Eagles and Chiefs should enjoy calm, controlled conditions.

The stadium does not have a defined capacity, with documentation claiming a 73,208-seat maximum for New Orleans Saints games and a separate assertion that "maximum seating is generally considered 74,295." Regardless, a huge crowd is expected for the Super Bowl, and those attendees will be out of the elements and under the roof.

Has Caesars Superdome hosted Super Bowl before?

Caesars Superdome has hosted no fewer than seven previous Super Bowls, the most of any stadium. Between the dome guaranteeing good conditions for the game itself, a warmer climate that attracts fans, and New Orleans' history as a tourist hotspot, the stadium has been a favorite for the NFL over the years.

Still, it has been 12 years since the league brought its biggest game to Louisiana, owing in part to one of the strangest incidents in Super Bowl history. In the third quarter of Super Bowl 47, a power outage caused the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers to be delayed for 34 minutes.

However, since then the stadium has been improved, with the New Orleans Saints announcing a $560 million renovation that was completed before the start of this NFL season.

Here are the results from the previous Super Bowls hosted at Caesars Superdome:

  • Super Bowl 12 (1977-78): Dallas Cowboys 27, Denver Broncos 10
  • Super Bowl 15 (1980-81): Oakland Raiders 27, Philadelphia Eagles 10
  • Super Bowl 20 (1985-86): Chicago Bears 45, New England Patriots 10
  • Super Bowl 24 (1989-90): San Francisco 49ers 55, Denver Broncos 10
  • Super Bowl 31 (1996-97): Green Bay Packers 35, New England Patriots 21
  • Super Bowl 36 (2001-02): New England Patriots 20, St. Louis Rams 17
  • Super Bowl 47 (2012-13): Baltimore Ravens 34, San Francisco 49ers 31

What other big events has Caesars Superdome hosted?

Beyond its role as the home of the New Orleans Saints, Caesars Superdome has routinely hosted some of the biggest events in American sports.

The stadium has hosted five college football national championship games, six editions of the "Final Four" in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, Mohamed Ali's boxing win over Leon Spinks (giving the iconic fighter the heavyweight title for the third time), and two editions of WrestleMania.

Perhaps most notably, Caesars Superdome was also a major shelter in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with untold thousands taking refuge in the stadium during and after the storm.
