Same QB matchups in multiple Super Bowls: Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes latest in Super Bowl 59

Over the last three seasons, Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes have been at the top of their game among the other NFL quarterbacks.
The two have gone for 90 combined wins, five conference titles and five Super Bowl appearances — of which Mahomes owns three of them.
On Sunday, in Super Bowl 59 the two young quarterbacks will look to lead their team to two different pieces of history. For Hurts, he looks to become just the second quarterback in Philadelphia Eagles history to win the Super Bowl. While for Mahomes, he looks to make the Kansas City Chiefs the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
But before the two take the field at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans come 5:30 p.m. CT, their names have already been linked to some Super Bowl history: they are just the fourth quarterback matchup to meet in multiple Super Bowls with the same team.
Mahomes, of course, won Round 1 against Hurts in Super Bowl 57 despite being outdueled by the Eagles quarterback statistically.
Here's everything you need to know about which starting quarterbacks have met up against each other more than once in the Super Bowl, and their records in the second meeting:
Same QB matchups for multiple Super Bowls
Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach
- Super Bowls 10: Pittsburgh Steelers 21, Dallas Cowboys 17
- Super Bowl 13: Pittsburgh Steelers 35, Dallas Cowboys 31
Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach were the first two quarterbacks to meet up in the Super Bowl twice with the same team as the same starting quarterback.
The Blonde Bomber won the first matchup in Super Bowl 10 against Captain America on a game-winning 64-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Lynn Swann late in the fourth quarter. Both quarterbacks would meet up again three years later in Super Bowl 13, when Bradshaw and the Steelers staved off a late fourth-quarter comeback from Staubach and the Cowboys.
In the two Super Bowls against Staubach, Bradshaw threw for 518 yards and six touchdowns. Meanwhile, Staubach threw for 432 yards and five touchdowns.
Bradshaw's first win over Staubach made the Steelers the third NFL franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowls. He is the only quarterback to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice in his career, as the Steelers defeated the Rams in Super Bowl 14.
Troy Aikman and Jim Kelly
- Super Bowl 27: Dallas Cowboys 52, Buffalo Bills 17
- Super Bowl 28: Dallas Cowboys 30, Buffalo Bills 13
Who could forget about the 1990s and the dominance of the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills with Troy Aikman and Jim Kelly?
Aikman led the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl for the first time in over a decade in 1993 with a roster that was filled with talent, highlighted by Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith. In Super Bowl 27, Aikman threw for four touchdowns — two to Irvin, and one each to Jay Novacek and Alvin Harper — in the Cowboys' 52-17 rout of the Bills.
The Hall of Famer and now "Monday Night Football" analyst came out on top again the year later, giving Kelly a 0-4 record in four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990-1994 — the only quarterback to do so. Buffalo has not returned to the Big Game since, and is one of 12 teams that have not won a Lombardi Trophy in NFL history.
Aikman and Kelly are the only quarterbacks in Super Bowl history to play against each other in back-to-back Super Bowls.
Eli Manning and Tom Brady
- Super Bowl 42: Giants 17, Patriots 14
- Super Bowl 46: Giants 21, Patriots 17
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick built the New England Patriots into one of the NFL's greatest dynasties during their 20 seasons together in Foxborough with six Super Bowl titles and 13 conference championship appearances.
However, their Achilles heel was Eli Manning and the New York Giants.
In Super Bowl 42, Manning guided the Giants to a late fourth-quarter 17-14 comeback victory to stop Brady from leading the Patriots to being the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to go undefeated for the entire season with a Super Bowl victory. En route to his go-ahead touchdown pass, Manning, of course, connected with David Tyree for the famous "helmet catch" on third-and-5.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback replicated that success in Super Bowl 46 when he led the Giants to their fourth Super Bowl title in franchise history with a 21-17 win. Manning is just one of two quarterbacks to hand Brady a loss in the Super Bowl, the other being Nick Foles in Super Bowl 52 with the Eagles.
Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts
- Super Bowl 57: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35
- Super Bowl 59: TBD
The two will meet again for the second time in the Super Bowl on Sunday, and third in their NFL careers. Hurts won the lone regular-season meeting against Mahomes, coming in Week 11 of the 2023 regular season.
"I've learned so much," Hurts said this week about the rematch and having a second chance in the Super Bowl. "It's the same as any other game and, you know, I think the moments are the moments but ultimately, you know, every game has its lesson -- good, bad or indifferent. So, just being able to become wiser, grow and mature and take all these lessons in for the next season and the next games.
"It's had a great driving force. It lit a flame, lit a fire in me, and to have this opportunity again is exactly what you work for."
Added Mahomes on if he will take anything from Super Bowl 57 into Super Bowl 59: "You take a couple of things (from then) just (because) they are a lot of the same players. Obviously, they have new players but a lot of the same players and a lot of the same coaches. You have to learn from what they've done this season (as well)..."
