Who are the Steelers' free agents? Russell Wilson, Justin Fields headline pending FAs

The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the 2024 NFL season at 10-7, their fifth winning season in a row. The team continued its streak of seasons with at least eight wins to 21 and maintained coach Mike Tomlin's perfect record of finishing at least 0.500 every year as head coach.
Pittsburgh started the 2024 season strong with eight wins in their first 10 games, even with a change at quarterback. Justin Fields started the season at the position before Russell Wilson took over starting in Week 7.
The Steelers hit 8-2 after a win over division rival Baltimore in Week 11 but things took a turn from there. Pittsburgh went 2-5 to close the season and lost to Baltimore in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Fields, Wilson and a dozen more key contributors on offense and defense are hitting free agency for the Steelers. As the team looks ahead to the offseason to retool and compete in the AFC North once again, they'll have to make decisions at key positions, including quarterback.

Types of NFL free agents
There are four different types of free agents, the most common being unrestricted free agents (UFA). These players' contracts have expired and have played four or more accrued seasons.
The other three types of free agents are:
- Street free agents (SFA): Players who were released by their team or were not under contract in the previous season.
- Exclusive rights free agents (ERFA): Players whose contracts have expired but have less than three accrued seasons. The team the player was on in the previous season can offer a one-year contract for the league minimum. If the team does that, the player cannot sign with another team.
- Restricted free agents (RFA): Players whose contracts have expired but have played exactly three accrued seasons. Teams have options to offer different tenders to these players and can match an offer from a different team. If the team does not match another offer, they will not receive a compensatory pick in the NFL draft.

When does NFL free agency start?
Free agency starts at the beginning of the new league year. This year, the NFL league year and free agency begin Wednesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. ET.
Teams don't have to wait until that deadline for deals, though, as there is a "negotiating period" that begins two days before the start of free agency. Deals made in that period become official on March 12.
