After sliding out of the first round, quarterback Shedeur Sanders was picked in the fifth round (144th overall pick) in the 2025 NFL draft. Here’s what to know about Sanders.

Shedeur Sanders draft profile, scouting report

Sanders has the highest floor of any passer in the class thanks to his accuracy, timing, poise and toughness. His physical traits are average and will limit his ceiling in the NFL but he could be a day one starter and provide a great baseline for an offense needing quarterback stability. — Ayrton Ostly

The youngest son of Deion Sanders finished his major college career as the all-time career leader in completion percentage at 71.8%, according to sports-reference.com. At the same time, he took a beating behind some subpar offensive lines and even finished the 2023 season with a fractured back. Those two traits will come in handy in the NFL: accuracy and toughness. He’s also mature beyond his age of 23. His dad’s nickname for him is “Grown,” because he’s so unflappable. That also will come in handy. He’s just got to learn not to hold onto the ball too long when trying to make magic — Brent Schrotneboer

Why did Shedeur Sanders fall out of first round?

After his precipitous slide out of the first round on Thursday night, the most polarizing player in the NFL Draft suddenly had another whole package of drama attached to his compelling storyline.

So, nobody thought the Colorado quarterback and high-profiled son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders was worth a first-round pick?

Sure, nitpicking is allowed – and expected as part of the due diligence of talent evaluations – when it comes to breaking down prospects. But in Sanders’ case, even if his correctable flaw of holding onto the football too long can be fixed (like flaws that can be found with any given prospect), it strikes me as a culture pick, too. Or non-pick. — Jarrett Bell

What did Deion Sanders say about Shedeur's slide?

Several teams with quarterback needs passed on the second-team All-American, with many questioning why Sanders, who many had a first-round grade on, was passed up. Coach Prime was one of those who questioned it.

How did Shedeur Sanders react to falling out of first round?

"We all didn't expect this, of course, but I feel like with God, anything possible, everything possible. I don't feel like this happened for no reason. All of this is, of course, fuel to the fire. Under no circumstances did we all know this was going to happen, but we understand we on to bigger and better things," Shedeur Sanders said. "Tomorrow's the day. We going to be happy regardless. Legendary."
