Few expected the Washington Commanders to be a playoff contender entering the 2024 NFL season. They surprised most NFL fans an analysts by turning themselves into a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn played a major role in Washington's turnaround. Daniels put together arguably the greatest rookie season in NFL history while Quinn led the team with a steady hand and helped transition the franchise rapidly away from the Dan Snyder years.
The result was an eight-win improvement that allowed the Commanders to make the playoffs. They won their first postseason games since 2005, upsetting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions before losing to the eventual Super Bowl 59 champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship game.
Washington will now enter unfamiliar territory for the 2025 NFL season. Many view them as a legitimate Super Bowl contender, so they will have expectations to which to live up during the campaign.
The Commanders have improved their roster during the offseason. The Commanders should be good once again in 2025, but they shouldn't necessarily be expected to improve upon their record this season.
Washington ranks 19th in strength of schedule for the 2025 NFL season, per Sharp Football Analysis. That means they will play what projects to be a tougher-than-average schedule.
Comparatively, the Commanders benefitted from playing the NFL's easiest schedule during the 2024 season. That was part of why they were able to log such a significant improvement from season-to-season.
The tougher schedule shouldn't completely undo Washington's progress. The Commanders still have Daniels, who flashed MVP potential as a rookie, and improved his supporting cast. That should allow both Daniels and Washington to take a step forward toward being a Super Bowl contender.
But unless the Commanders can fare better than expected in road matchups against five playoff teams from last season – the Chargers, Chiefs, Eagles, Packers and Vikings – they are likely to finish with a worse regular-season record than they did last year.
