‘I’m pretty hopeful’: Expect Micah Parsons, Cowboys to eventually get deal done

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and star defensive end Micah Parsons had a discussion on the field at minicamp on Tuesday. The conversion was roughly 30 minutes, according to reporters on the ground in Dallas. The chat could be a positive sign a contract extension is forthcoming for the Cowboys star linebacker.
“I’m pretty hopeful,” Parsons told reporters on Tuesday. “I understand that it’s up to (Jerry Jones). He gives the green light on everything, so hopefully something is done by next month.”
Parsons’ representation hasn’t had any contract extension talks with Jones as of publish time, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told Paste BN Sports. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
The pass rusher is in the final year of his rookie contract. Unlike some of his peers across the NFL, Parsons attended minicamp despite not having a long-term contract in place, a good-faith gesture that a deal will get done eventually.
There’s reason to be optimistic a deal will be complete before the Cowboys kick off the regular season on the road against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.
When negotiations do commence, the potential value of Parsons' deal is evident. The Cowboys standout is expected to become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett currently holds that title, earning an annual average of $40 million.
Both sides aren’t concerned about the pace of negotiations, a person close to the situation told Paste BN Sports, given that there’s still time before the regular season gets underway.
There’s precedent of the Cowboys not completing deals until the start of the regular season. Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb agreed to terms on an extension in late August of last year, while quarterback Dak Prescott didn’t get his mega-deal finalized until the day of the Cowboys’ Week 1 game this past season.
The fact that Parsons attended minicamp is a positive sign. Parsons told reporters he plans to show up to Cowboys training camp as well.
Parsons is "hopeful" a deal will get done. The good news is it seems like a matter of when and not if. Jones has yet to call Parsons’ representation and get the ball rolling on a lucrative extension, but the expectation is that he will in the near future.
