San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York fired his second coach in as many seasons on Sunday.

So one of the first questions at his news conference on Monday was, well, not exactly a softball.

York was asked “why shouldn’t you be dismissed or reassigned for bad performance]?”

York was quick with his reply.

“I own this football team. You don’t dismiss owners.”

The 49ers confirmed Sunday that both coach Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke had been fired. Kelly was the second consecutive coach to get just one year with the team, as Jim Tomsula was fired at the end of the 2015 season.

York, whose team finished 2-14 this season, went on to say he is looking for a general manager and coach who work together to bring a winning team back to San Francisco.

That relationship, he said, “is the most important” in the building.
