Jimmy Garoppolo benched at halftime as 49ers fall in big hole vs. Dolphins

In his first game back after missing the previous two contests due to a sprained ankle, Jimmy Garoppolo lasted just one half for the San Francisco 49ers.

In an eventual 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback was benched with his team trailing 30-7 at the start of the second half Sunday. He was replaced by C.J. Beathard.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told Fox's Lindsay Czarniak at halftime the move was made "to protect Jimmy."

Garoppolo completed just seven of 17 attempts for 77 yards and threw two interceptions before being pulled. He was also sacked three times.

"You can tell he was affected by the ankle," Shanahan told reporters after the game.

Garoppolo suffered the injury in a Week 2 win over the New York Jets. Nick Mullens replaced him as the starter during Garoppolo's absence but was pulled for Beathard in last week's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Beathard completed nine of 18 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.
