NFL's 3rd all-time leading rusher, Frank Gore, to sign one-day contract with 49ers, retire

The NFL's third all-time leading rusher, after a 16-year career, is calling it quits.
Veteran running back Frank Gore is working out the details to sign a one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers, the team that selected him in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft, so that he can formally retire.
Gore, 38, played the first 10 seasons of his career in San Francisco (2005-14) and also played for the Colts (2015-17), Dolphins (2018), Bills (2019) and Jets (2020). He was unsigned last season.
"We're still trying to figure out when I'm going to do my one-day contract," Gore told To sign, do my retirement," Gore said on the SFNiners YouTube channel. "I told (team owner) Jed York, I always wanted to be with the Niners. We working on that right now."
Gore said he expected it to take place in a couple of months.
A five-time Pro Bowler and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame all-2010's team, Gore ran the ball 3,735 times for 16,000 yards with 81 touchdowns. That ranks him third on the all-time rushing list behind Emmitt Smith (18,355) and Walter Payton (16,726).
He also recorded 3,985 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.
Gore said he was also working with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to try to see if he could work in the 49ers' front office.
"I love looking at talent," Gore said. "I love evaluating talent and I love ball. And they know that I know football players, what it's supposed to take to be a football player."
