Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III was cleared to participate in non-contact activity, the team announced on Wednesday.

Griffin broke a bone in his left shoulder in the season-opening game and was placed on injured reserve. The Browns said it's "still unclear when the Browns quarterback will return to practice."

ESPN reported earlier Wednesday that Griffin would meet with team officials to determine the next step, which would likely be full practice participation before he could be activated to the 53-man roster.

“I think he’s getting closer," Browns coach Hue Jackson told reporters on Monday.

Teams are allowed to bring one player back from injured reserve each season, a decision that must be made within 21 days of a player’s return to practice.

The 0-10 Browns have used six quarterbacks this season. Rookie Cody Kessler has started seven of the last eight games at quarterback.

The Browns signed Griffin to a two-year, $15 million deal in the offseason after the Washington Redskins cut their former No. 1 draft pick.
