BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns have excused quarterback Baker Mayfield from next week's mandatory minicamp, the team has announced.
Mayfield has been absent from the team’s offseason training program this spring. Those workouts, however, are voluntary.
Unless otherwise excused, players are required to attend minicamp, which runs Tuesday through Thursday. Those who don't face a fine of up to $93,085.
Mayfield and the team have been at odds since the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in March. The team has been attempting to work out a deal to send the fifth-year quarterback to another team.
Mayfield, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft, is on his fifth-year option.
