The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their first surprise cut of the season as teams whittle down their rosters to 53 players on Tuesday's deadline.
Wide receiver Tyler Johnson is being waived, per The Athletic's Greg Auman.
A fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Minnesota, Johnson has shown flashes of potential over the past two seasons — he had 36 catches for 360 yards and played in all 17 games last year — but has also been inconsistent. He did lead the Bucs in both catches and yards this preseason with 11 receptions and 133 yards, and also had a strong training camp.
He'll obviously be a strong candidate to return on the Bucs' practice squad, but it wouldn't be surprising to see another team grab him off waivers.
