2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Shaquil Barrett drowns in family pool

The two-year old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett drowned Sunday morning in the family's swimming pool, Tampa (Florida) police confirmed.

Arrayah Barrett was the youngest of the family's four children. According to a spokesperson for the Tampa Police Deparment, officers responded to a call at around 9:30 a.m. of a child falling into a pool. Arrayah Barrett was taken to a local hospital, the spokesperson said, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Tampa police also confirmed that an investigation has been opened, but that the incident is not believed to be suspicious in nature and appears to be a tragic accident.

The Buccaneers issued a statement Sunday through their Twitter account in support of Barrett and his family.

"Today's tragic news is heartbreaking for all members of the Buccaneers family," the franchise said Sunday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Shaq, Jordanna and the entire Barrett family during this unimaginably difficult time.

"While no words can provide true comfort at a time such as this, we offer our support and love as they begin to process this very profound loss of their beloved Arrayah."

Just one week ago, Barrett posted a birthday tribute to Arrayah on Instagram.

"Happy 2nd bday to my cutie girl," Barrett wrote in the post. "So sweet and cute. You made our family complete. I love you baby girl😘😘"

Shaquil Barrett, 30, is a two-time Pro Bowl and two-time Super Bowl champion. He has spent eight seasons in the NFL with both the Denver Broncos (2015-18) and Buccaneers. In March 2021, he re-signed with the Buccaneers on a four-year deal worth up to $72 million. He was an instrumental player in the team's Super Bowl run in 2020, posting four sacks combined between the NFC title game and Super Bowl 55.
