Cardinals quick take: Dobbs' and second-half offense's struggles continue in loss to Seahawks
SEATTLE — For a time in the first half, it didn't look like Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs would make it through Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks without being subbed out for rookie Clayton Tune.
He missed receivers, threw dangerously into double coverage and had a hard time avoiding pressure. His offensive line had a hard time consistently protecting him. And when Dobbs underthrew Michael Wilson in the end zone in the second quarter, the ball was intercepted and it looked like a switch could come, with the Cardinals down, 7-3.
But after wild sequence of events that negated the turnover, saw the Seahawks commit two personal fouls and resulted in the ejection of captain and starting left tackle D.J. Humphries, while allowing the Cardinals to maintain possession, Dobbs stayed in. A 25-yard touchdown run off the left side, where Humphries had been, came on the very next play.
Dobbs' running ability bought him the rest of the afternoon on the field, even though the Cardinals fell to the Seahawks, 20-10, and dropped to 1-6. Tune came on for a snap, but his pass on a fake punt didn't gain a first down.
The Cardinals had chances to tie or take the lead, their defense forcing three turnovers including two in the second half. But Dobbs never really got it going with his arm, completing 19 of 33 passes for just 146 yards without a touchdown.
Matt Prater missed a 34-yard field goal try early in the fourth quarter that would have helped.
Dobbs took a sack and limped off the field slightly on the Cardinals' final drive. The questions about quarterback could resurface this week.
The Cardinals have opened up the practice window for Kyler Murray for what would indicate a return to game action in the next few weeks. It's not clear when exactly Murray will be activated, but Dobbs hasn't been as sharp as he was early in the season.
Last week, he was 21 of 41 for 235 yards with a thrown interception against the Los Angeles Rams. Two weeks ago he completed less than 50 percent of his passes despite throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Murray will be back, but the question is, will Dobbs continue to start in the interim? A Week 8 matchup with a nasty Baltimore Ravens defense looms.
