Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy rejoins Kansas City Chiefs as quarterbacks coach

Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant Matt Nagy is returning to Andy Reid's coaching staff after several years away as head coach of the Chicago Bears.
The Chiefs announced on Friday that they officially hired Nagy as a senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. Nagy spent five seasons with the Chiefs, from 2013-2017, serving as the team's quarterbacks coach before he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator (with Brad Childress in 2016), and then the sole offensive coordinator during quarterback Alex Smith’s best season in 2017. That season also happened to be QB Patrick Mahomes’ rookie year, so the two are already quite familiar with each other.
Nagy was named head coach of the Bears following the 2017 NFL season and earned Coach of the Year honors in 2018 after leading Chicago to a 12-4 record and its first NFC North title since 2010. That was the high-water mark, though, as the team went 8-8 each of the next two seasons with sputtering offenses before finishing 6-11 this past season. Nagy was fired after four seasons along with general manager Ryan Pace.
Nagy played quarterback at Delaware and began his NFL coaching career as an intern for Reid in 2008 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a member of Eagles staff until Reid was fired by Philadelphia following the 2012 season. Nagy then followed Reid to Kansas City.

This reunion made a lot of sense as soon as Mike Kafka left for the New York Giants. Nagy already knows the key players, play-callers and the way that things operate in Kansas City. If he can help Mahomes become more consistent after an inconsistent 2021 season, it could put him on the fast track to earning another head-coaching opportunity in the NFL.
