Where do Chiefs stand after brutal loss? Odds clear on KC's Super Bowl outlook

Trouble is brewing in Kansas City.

As reigning NFL champions, the Kansas City Chiefs were significant favorites to win Super Bowl 58 when betting odds opened for this season. For 14 weeks, they remained comfortably among the top three as other teams' odds surged or dropped.

But the Chiefs have started to stumble coming into the final stretch of games this regular season.

They've dropped three of their last four games, including a 20-14 loss to the Raiders on Christmas Day. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had the lowest expected points added per drive of any game in his career.

Now, the Chiefs' odds are at risk of dropping out of the top five.

Chiefs Super Bowl odds

As of Wednesday afternoon, BetMGM Sportsbook has Kansas City tied with the Dolphins and Eagles for third place at +800 odds and trailing the 49ers (+240) and Ravens (+400).

They'll have two final chances to right the ship in the regular season: a Week 17 trip to Cincinnati to take on the Jake Browning-led Bengals and a Week 18 home finale against the Easton Stick-led Chargers.

Chiefs playoffs scenarios

Since the Chiefs drafted Mahomes in 2017, the team has not played a single playoff game on the road (not including "neutral" Super Bowl sites). Over the last five seasons, since the Texas Tech product took over as the starting quarterback, Kansas City has never lost before the AFC Championship.

If the season ended after Week 16, one or both of those streaks could be at risk.

The Chiefs are currently slated to hold the No. 3 seed in the AFC through 16 weeks of regular season action. Though they have a comfortable lead in the AFC West, they are only one game ahead of the Jaguars, who currently hold the fourth seed.

The Ravens' win over the 49ers after the Chiefs' loss on Monday barred Kansas City from securing the AFC's top seed and a bye. The team could still make a run at the No. 2 seed, though it needs two wins and two Dolphins losses.

As things currently stand, the Chiefs would play the Bills in the Wild Card Round. A drop to the fourth seed would mean a game against the Browns while a push to the second seed would match them up with the Colts.
