Jaguars make Chargers pay for more late blunders

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sometimes, it’s just enough to win.

Ask the Jacksonville Jaguars. That was the case on Sunday at Everbank Field, where the Jaguars topped the Los Angeles Chargers 20-17 in overtime in a game that seemed lost several times over.

A.J. Bouye’s interception and 51-yard return set up Josh Lambo’s 30-yard field goal with six minutes, 48 seconds elapsed into overtime.

Yes, the Jaguars (6-3) have finally beaten a team quarterbacked by Philip Rivers. That hadn’t happened since 2007, and it almost didn’t happen this time, either.

Consider Jacksonville’s path to overtime included a fumble by rookie Austin Ekeler, recovered by Tashaun Gipson, as the Chargers were poised to run out the clock in the final two minutes. The gift was followed by a Blake Bortles interception that seemed to seal a Chargers victory.

Not quite. The Chargers (3-6) went three-and-out, then Jacksonville forced overtime with Lambo’s 34-yard field goal with three seconds on the clock. That kick, by the way, was aided by a silly roughing the passer penalty on Joey Bosa, who needlessly flung Bortles to the turf after an incompletion.

It was that type of day.

And it won’t go into the books as a signature return for Leonard Fournette. The Jaguars rookie suited up for the first time in 28 days – due to an ankle injury, a bye week and a team-imposed suspension for a conduct issue – and was in need of knocking off some major rust.

Fournette finished with a season-low 33 yards on 17 rushes, averaging 2.9 yards per carry. Although he was back on the field for overtime, Fournette sat on the bench during the frantic fourth quarter.
