Greg Hardy's high school coach always had a 'concern' about Cowboys DE's future
Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy was back in the headlines Friday when Deadspin published photos, police interview transcripts and documents in a detailed report of Hardy’s alleged assault of ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder on May 12, 2014.
And it raised the question - again - of who is Greg Hardy?
People who knew Hardy as a student of Briarcrest Christian School in Eads, Tenn. use words like goofy, quiet, shy and free spirit to characterize him as a teenager. But that doesn’t explain Hardy’s other side.
Did you ever worry about Greg or worry that he might be a danger to others?
Joe Hamstra, Hardy’s high school football coach for his junior and senior seasons, heard the question and paused. Ten seconds passed.
He let out a deep sigh, before finally interrupting the dead air that had uncomfortably started to fill the phone call.
“Man, you’ve got me in a tough one there,” he finally said. Another pause, another sigh. “Well, gosh darn it, that’s a tough question. You’ve got to help me out here.
“We all felt like Greg had a chance to make it to the League, even when he was in high school. Every college recruiter that would come by said: ‘This guy has got a chance.’ So I felt like as long as Greg made it, he’d be OK. But if he didn’t make it?
“Yes, I would be concerned. What would his life look like then? That’s all I can say about that.”
When pressed further, Hamstra declined to elaborate.
