Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Maliek Collins broke a bone in his left foot Thursday, but the team still is hopeful he could be back in time for the regular season.

The team says the third-year pro will likely need surgery on his fifth metatarsal. It's the same foot that required surgery in January because of a stress reaction that bothered him throughout the 2017 season.

Collins, a starter in each of his first two NFL seasons, suffered the injury during the Cowboys' voluntary offseason conditioning program.

Two years ago, he broke his right foot during team activities, missing most of the offseason.
