Stephen Ross: Joe Philbin will coach Dolphins in 2015

Take one name off the NFL head coaching hot seat.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Sunday that coach Joe Philbin will return in 2015, per the team's official Twitter account.

The Dolphins were eliminated from playoff contention with the Pittsburgh Steelers' 20-12 win Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. But after moving to 8-7 with a 37-35 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Miami can secure its first winning season since 2008 with a Week 17 victory over the New York Jets.

If Miami does stand pat, it eliminates a possible landing spot for San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.

In January 2011, Ross met with Harbaugh, who was then Stanford's coach, while Tony Sparano was still leading the Dolphins. He later apologized and gave Sparano an extension, only to fire the coach in December of that year.

Harbaugh has not addressed multiple reports that he is coaching his final season with the 49ers and will take another job in the NFL or collegiate ranks.

Philbin has a 23-24 record in three years with the Dolphins.
