Byron Jones, who said he can no longer run or jump due to injuries sustained during his career, will be released by the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins will cut ties with the cornerback on March 15 with a post-June 1 designation, allowing the team to save $13.6 million in salary cap space, a person with knowledge of the move told Paste BN Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose a personnel move that was not yet official.

Jones, 30, signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Dolphins, which included $57 million in guaranteed money during the 2020 offseason. He played only two seasons with the Dolphins before missing all of last season following lower leg surgery.

Before the NFL scouting combine last week, Jones issued a warning to future NFL players after the league posted video of him setting a world record with a 12-3 broad jump in 2015.

“Much has changed in 8 years. Today I can’t run or jump because of my injuries sustained playing this game,” Jones wrote on his Twitter account. “DO NOT take the pills they give you. DO NOT take the injections they give you. If you absolutely must, consult an outside doctor to learn the long-term implications.”

“It was an honor and privilege to play in the NFL but it came at a regrettable cost I did not foresee," Jones said in another tweet. “In my opinion, no amount of professional success or financial gain is worth avoidable chronic pain and disabilities. Godspeed to the draft class of 2023.”

Jones was a first-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015 and spent four seasons in the NFL with Dallas before signing with Miami.

Jones has played in 109 games with four interceptions, 57 pass deflections, 444 tackles and one touchdown in his career.
