What position will Travis Hunter play at the 2025 NFL combine?

Colorado Buffaloes two-way star and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter has received his position assignment for the 2025 NFL combine.
Hunter, who started at the cornerback and wide receiver positions during his collegiate career, will be considered a defensive back for the scouting combine later this month. What does that mean, exactly?
Essentially, the position designation is nothing more than a tool to keep Hunter – along with every other player attending the combine – on a certain schedule. All 300+ combine invitees are split up by position, and those position groups determine their daily schedule, which can vary significantly.
For Hunter, his designation as a defensive back at this year's NFL combine does not mean much for his long-term future.
It doesn't preclude him from participating in wide receiver drills, nor does it signify what his role will be with the NFL team that drafts him.
Instead, it simply determines what day the reigning Heisman winner will be available to the media, completing athletic tests like the 40-yard dash, getting his measurements taken, etc.
Here's what to know about what lies ahead for Hunter at the NFL combine later this month:
What position is Travis Hunter playing at the NFL combine?
Hunter will hold a defensive back designation throughout the NFL combine. This does not disqualify him from participating in wide receiver drills later in the week.
The Colorado two-way star's positional assignment defines his schedule for some core combine events. As with the rest of this year's defensive back invitees, Hunter's schedule is the following:
- Tuesday, Feb. 25: Registration, orientation, team interviews
- Wednesday, Feb. 26: Medical exam, more team interviews
- Thursday, Feb. 27: Orthopedic exam, media availability, NFLPA meeting, final team interviews
- Friday, Feb. 28: Measurements, on-field workouts
- Saturday, March 1: Bench press (optional), broadcast interviews
In addition to the full defensive back schedule, Hunter may also (read: likely will) participate in the on-field workouts with wide receivers on Saturday, March 1.
In that scenario, he'll likely pass on re-doing measurable drills like the 40-yard dash, vertical leap, etc. (assuming he did those the day before) and focus only on the receiver-specific drills like the gauntlet drill and route-running.
Other multi-position players at the NFL combine
Should Hunter participate in both defensive back and wide receiver drills at the combine, he'd be far from the first player to play multiple positions at the pre-draft event.
Pending free agent linebacker Shaq Thompson did some running back drills to go with his linebacker workouts before the Carolina Panthers drafted him in 2015. New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers participated in linebacker and defensive back drills at the combine in 2017.
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey also split efforts in his pre-draft process, though not all at the combine. In 2017, he participated as a running back in Indianapolis before heading to his Stanford pro day, where he also added some slot receiver and kick return workouts.
When is the 2025 NFL combine?
The 2025 NFL combine officially runs from Thursday, Feb. 27, to Sunday, March 2. However, a few days before that, some players, head coaches and general managers will also hold media availability sessions.
