NFL draft: History of quarterbacks drafted No. 1, include Caleb Williams, Peyton Manning

Quarterback is the most important position in football, so it's no wonder that historically it's the position most frequently addressed with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
Since the first-ever NFL draft in 1936, 39 quarterbacks have been taken with the first overall pick. The position ranked second-most in No. 1 picks is running back, with 23 such selections – though none since 1995.
Meanwhile, a quarterback has been selected with the top draft pick in eight of the last 10 NFL drafts. At the time of writing, that trend appears set to continue in 2025 – the quarterback-needy Tennessee Titans are on the clock with the No. 1 overall pick.
