What is a compensatory pick?
Along with the seven picks every team begins with in a given year's draft, the NFL also awards at least 32 additional, "compensatory" picks to various teams. These additional picks are positioned at the ends of Rounds 3-7.
Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that "lost more or better compensatory free agents than they signed in the previous year," according to an NFL.com article. "The formula that determines compensatory free agents is based on salary, playing time and postseason honors."
Teams may also earn additional compensatory picks if a minority coach or executive they hired departs to take a head coach or "primary football executive position" with another team.
This year, 16 teams earned at least one compensatory pick. Three of them – the Rams, Lions and 49ers – earned special compensatory picks for losing minority coaches/executives to other teams.
