Reports: Carson Wentz to start for Eagles if healthy
Trading Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings might not be the only surprise the Philadelphia Eagles have at the quarterback position.
Rookie Carson Wentz might be elevated from third-string to Week 1 starter, if he is healthy.
Wentz, taken with the No. 2 pick in the draft after the Eagles traded up, has been sidelined since Week 1 of the preseason with a rib injury. But several reports indicate the team is thinking of having him start in the opener against the Cleveland Browns.
If Wentz has not recovered by then, he would assume the starting role when his health allows.
General manager Howie Roseman said it would be a "coach's decision" whether Wentz started during a news conference Saturday afternoon. He said coach Doug Pederson's father died on Friday and the coach was not in Philadelphia.
The Eagles have been adamant since taking Wentz they would give him a year to learn in the NFL, with Bradford starting and Chase Daniel as the backup. But those plans appear to have changed with Bradford headed out of town.
