Eagles 40, Chiefs 22: Jalen Hurts, ferocious D take down Chiefs to win Super Bowl 59

NEW ORLEANS − For the past two decades, the Eagles have longed to have a similar run of Super Bowl success as their opponents Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the New England Patriots before them.
An Eagles win Sunday over the Chiefs would go a long way towards setting them on that path. After all, the Eagles are playing in the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons and third time in eight.
The Eagles were well on their way to doing just that, beating the Chiefs 40-22 as Jalen Hurts threw for 221 yards and ran for 72 more. Meanwhile, the defense intercepted Patrick Mahomes twice and sacked him 6 times.

Jake Elliott hits 4th field goal, this one from 50 yards
Jake Elliott hit his fourth field goal of the game, this one from 50 yards, giving the Eagles a 40-6 lead with 8:01 left. For Elliott, it was redemption after a tough season. He had gone 1-for-7 from 50 yards and beyond coming into the game.
Jalen Hurts deep to DeVonta Smith, Eagles up 34-0
DeVonta Smith got into the act with 2:40 left in the third quarter, catching a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts. It came on the first play after Avonte Maddox broke up Patrick Mahomes' pass on 4th-and-3.
Hurts is 15-for-20 for 201 yard and 2 TDs at this point.
Josh Sweat up to 2.5 sacks; Eagles near sack record
Josh Sweat is due to become a free agent after the season. He's helping his cause financially with 2.5 sacks at the midway point of the third quarter. Sweat's sack gave the Eagles 5 for the game, 2 short of tying the Super Bowl record.
Saquon Barkley gets record; Eagles defense all over Patrick Mahomes
On defense, the Eagles sacked Patrick Mahomes three times, including on back-to-back plays before DeJean's INT, and intercepted him twice.
Mahomes was 6-for-14 for 33 yards and 2 interceptions in the first half. In all, the Eagles had a big advantage in total yards, at 179-23.
Jalen Hurts was 11-for-15 for 123 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Saquon Barkley was held in check, with 31 yards on 12 carries. But his last carry as the first half ended broke Terrell Davis' record of 2,476 yards in a season, including playoffs. Davis set his record in 1998.
Dotson had 2 catches for 42 yards, and Brown had 2 for 34 yards.

Cooper DeJean's 1st INT, pick-6 comes at a huge moment
Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean's first career interception came at a huge moment. Facing a 3rd-and-16 from the Chiefs' 24, Mahomes threw right for DeAndre Hopkins, but it was picked off by DeJean, who crossed to the middle of the field, then cut to the right sideline.
DeJean's 38-yard TD return gave the Eagles a 17-0 lead with 7:03 left in the first half. It was perhaps the Eagles' most impressive defensive series of the season as Josh Sweat and Jalyx Hunt sacked Patrick Mahomes on the first two plays.
Rare interception for Jalen Hurts, Chiefs take over at KC 2
Jalen Hurts had gone 195 attempts without throwing an interception, or since Nov. 10 against Dallas, when he went deep for A.J. Brown. But Hurts was being blitzed and didn't get enough on the ball. Bryan Cook intercepted it at the Chiefs' 2 yard line.
The Eagles were in field goal range. But the Chiefs punted the ball back to the Eagles.
Jahan Dotson comes up with big catch, Eagles take 7-0 lead
On 2nd-and-11 from the 28, the Chiefs blitzed Jalen Hurts, leaving Jahan Dotson 1-on-1 on the outside with Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson. It was originally ruled a TD, but a replay review determined Dotson was down inside the 1.
No matter, Hurts scored on a tush push on the next play, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter.
A.J. Brown called for dubious offensive pass interference on 4th down deep ball
Unlike the last Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl, there was a controversial penalty early in the game. On 4th-and-2 from midfield, Jalen Hurts completed a deep ball down the sideline to A.J. Brown for about 32 yards with Trent McDuffie in coverage.
But Brown was called for offensive pass interference on an iffy call at best. After the 10-yard penalty, the Eagles punted.
Eagles inactives: Bryce Huff, signed to $51M deal, a healthy scratch
The Eagles listed edge rusher Bryce Huff, their biggest free-agent signing last season money-wise − yes, even bigger than Saquon Barkley − among their inactives against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday.
While stunning considering that the Eagles signed Huff to a three-year deal worth as much as $51.1 million contract last spring, it was somewhat expected once the Eagles activated edge rusher Brandon Graham off injured reserve Saturday.
The Eagles' other inactives were QB Tanner McKee, OL Darian Kinnard, OL Trevor Keegan, CB Eli Ricks, DB Lewis Cine and WR Ainias Smith
FB Khari Blasingame and LB Nicholas Morrow received the practice-squad elevation.
Brandon Graham activated off IR after remarkable recovery
Brandon Graham is returning from a torn triceps muscle to play in the Super Bowl in what might be the final game of his NFL career. The Eagles activated him off injured reserve Saturday, completing a remarkable 2½-month recovery for an injury that typically takes four months or more.
To make room on the 53-man roster, the Eagles placed OL Nick Gates on IR with a groin injury.

Eagles vs Chiefs prediction
It's not that no one has stopped Saquon Barkley as much as the Eagles know he can dominate the clock late in the game when the Eagles have a lead. The formula has worked all season for the Eagles, as ugly as it has looked on occasion: The defense keeps Mahomes in check and the offense, behind Barkley, grinds out a win.
The pick: Eagles 29, Chiefs 23
