The Atlanta Falcons have begun to their search to replace retired defensive coordinator Dean Pees. This week, the Falcons requested permission to interview Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for the same position.

However, the Broncos have denied the request, according to Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post.

"Evero, the first-year Denver defensive coordinator, remains under contract with the Broncos for next season, so they're allowed to deny him the opportunity to interview for any job not considered a promotion," Gabriel wrote.

Fortunately for the Falcons, several good candidates remain available. The group includes former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores among others.

On Saturday, the team reportedly put in a request to interview Green Bay Packers passing game coordinator Jerry Gray.

Gray has ties to the Tennessee Titans, which is where Falcons head coach Arthur Smith and Pees both previously coached.

Pees led the Falcons defense for two seasons. The overall defense improved under his tutelage and produced some intriguing prospects. Guys like safeties Richie Grant and Jaylinn Hawkins took a significant leap under Pees.

The Falcons finished 26th in total defense this season. However, the defensive unit kept the offense in games and allowed 22.7 points per game.
