New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul’s season is out at least six weeks after he underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia and his groin, a person with knowledge of the situation told Paste BN Sports on Wednesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t made any announcement regarding the timeline for Pierre-Paul's return.

That likely means the season is over for Pierre-Paul, who announced the surgery on his Instagram account Wednesday morning, three days after he went down and walked gingerly to the locker room during a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pierre-Paul tweeted Wednesday morning saying the surgery went well.

Pierre-Paul, 27, has seven sacks this season – a key one for him as he plays on a one-year, $10 million contract. The injury will cost him $300,000 in per-game roster bonuses and he’ll miss out on the chance to hit incentives for sacks. But his play earlier this season figures to generate a solid market for his services come March.

"You can't expect one person to step in there and fill JPP's shoes," Giants coach Ben McAdoo said. "It's all hands on deck."

McAdoo said it was too early to tell if the team would place Pierre-Paul on season-ending injured reserve.

It had been an impressive return from the Fourth of July fireworks accident that cost him part of two fingers last year and kept him out the first half of the 2015 season.

“We was down, but we know that if we keep playing the way we’re playing and we can win some of these games, he’s going to be back and he’s going to be on the field with us,” safety Landon Collins said. “If we play like we’re down, and not coming with our all, he’s going to be down even more because we’re not going to be in the playoffs. That’s the goal. Let’s get him back and let’s get this championship.”
