NFL takes air out of report that Giants said Steelers used deflated balls

The NFL acted quickly to deny it was facing another Deflategate crisis.

After Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Sunday the New York Giants alerted the league that two balls used by the Pittsburgh Steelers last week were underinflated, the NFL said no such issue occurred.

"The officiating game ball procedures were followed and there were no chain of command issues," league spokesman Brian McCarthy. "All footballs were in compliance and no formal complaint was filed by the Giants with our office."

A person with knowledge of the team's actions confirmed to Tom Pelissero of Paste BN Sports the Giants did not submit a formal complaint. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not addressed the report.

The report revived one of the league's long-running dramas in Deflategate, which began when the Indianapolis Colts notified the NFL of the New England Patriots' use of underinflated footballs in the 2014 AFC Championship Game. NFL-appointed attorney Ted Wells reported that it was "more probable than not" that quarterback Tom Brady was part of a "scheme" to intentionally deflate balls prior to the game. After an extended legal battle, Brady served a four-game suspension this season.
