Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Josh Mauro was suspended by the NFL without pay for the first five games of the 2020 regular season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

He will be allowed to return to the Jaguars’ active roster on Monday, Oct. 12, following the team’s Week 5 game at Houston. He is still eligible to participate in all of the Jaguars' preseason practices, though.

The Jaguars acknowledged Friday that it was aware of the pending suspension when he signed on Aug. 11.

The Jaguars defensive line has been decimated by roster turnover. Defensive end Aaron Lynch was placed on the team's reserve/retired list Tuesday.

Defensive tackle Al Woods and defensive end/linebacker Lerentee McCray opted out because of coronavirus concerns. Defensive tackle Rodney Gunter's heart condition forced his retirement announcement.

Second-year defensive tackle Dontavius Russell (hip) is on the team's reserve injured list.

A seven-year veteran, Mauro was signed by the Arizona Cardinals in 2014 and played four seasons with the franchise. He played with the Giants in 2018 before signing with the Raiders last season.

In 72 career games, including 37 starts, Mauro has totaled 121 tackles (73 solos), 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
