Zach Wilson, Jets get a late-miracle drive in fourth quarter, then shock Giants in OT
EAST RUTHERFORD – Needing a few late Meadowlands Miracles to pull off a victory Sunday, the Jets’ wildest prayers were answered against the Giants.
Capitalizing on a missed Graham Gano field goal attempt with 25 seconds left, Zach Wilson’s pair of late 29-yard completions gave the Jets sudden life at MetLife Stadium – setting them up for a stunning comeback against their co-tenants.
After Greg Zuerlein’s game-tying, 35-yard field goal with one second left in regulation, the Jets completed a shocking 13-10 win with Zuerlein’s 33-yard field goal in overtime.
'24 seconds? No problem': Jets' unbelievable win over Giants keeps wildest dreams intact
Once more, the Jets’ defense had to answer the call, stopping the Giants’ first overtime possession before engineering the winning drive.
At their best, the Jets’ defense arrived Sunday as advertised, routinely frustrating their co-tenants at rainy MetLife Stadium.
Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor was forced from Sunday’s game with a second-quarter rib injury, leaving the Giants down to their third string quarterback – Don Bosco graduate Tommy DeVito.
But on an afternoon when it was largely an offensive slog for both offenses, two huge Jets defensive penalties were costly.
A pair of personal fouls, the second called against linebacker Jermaine Johnson, set up DeVito’s go-ahead, six-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
That bit of misdirection was the difference in the Giants’ 10-7 victory against a Jets team still looking to build any momentum.
With the Jets ahead 7-3, their defense was about to stop the Giants on third down when Johnson was called for unnecessary roughness against DeVito, setting up a first and goal.
Coming off a bye week, following their upset win against Philadelphia, the Jets (3-4) arrived as a healthier bunch against the home-team Giants (3-5), with Sauce Gardner and DJ Reed out of concussion protocol and back in the Jets’ secondary.
Midway through the second quarter, CJ Mosley and Quinton Jefferson combined on a stop against a rushing Taylor, driving him into the soggy turf and forcing him out with a rib injury.
Meanwhile, Wilson and the Jets – with one bold exception – weren’t making any headway against the Giants’ defense.
Late in the first quarter, the Jets had their lone, bright offensive moment – thanks to Breece Hall.
On a short pass from Wilson, the Jets’ running back zigged and zagged his way to a 50-yard touchdown to help the Jets to a 7-3 lead.
Hall scored on the first play of the Jets’ fifth possession of the game, with the previous four resulting in three punts and a lost fumble by Wilson that the Giants converted into a field goal.
Meanwhile, the Jets were at a complete loss on third-down conversions, and they were down to their fourth string center, with two injuries that did not help their halting offense.
But all of this was forgotten with a late-game miracle drive that ended this rainy day in victory.
