Zach Wilson, Jets come up one play short in frustrating loss to Raiders on Sunday night
Zach Wilson and the New York Jets came up short Sunday night in Las Vegas − one play short.
Wilson's Hail Mary heave as time expired was knocked down in the end zone, and the Jets fell to the Raiders, 16-12, in a tough, physical game at Allegiant Stadium.
The Jets (4-5) were able to move the ball down the field Sunday night, but were unable to reach the end zone, instead settling for four Greg Zuerlein field goals.
AARON RODGERS: Is he returning to Jets this season? Here's what he said Sunday night
"Self-inflicted wounds," Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters after the game. "Same story as the last couple weeks. We've got to figure it out, figure out how to stop shooting ourselves in the foot when you get those opportunities.
"I thought the offense moved the ball really well," Saleh added, "(we) had five shots in their territory, came away with four field goals. You're just not going to win football games."
Penalties were also a factor for the Jets, who were flagged eight times for 83 yards.
"Just dumb, dumb stuff," Saleh said.
The Raiders (5-5), in their second game under interim head coach Antonio Pierce, scored the game's only touchdown when rookie QB Aidan O'Connell found Michael Mayer in the end zone. The touchdown proved to be the difference Sunday night.
Wilson, who was 23 of 39 for 263 yards and one interception, had the Jets driving twice in the game's final minutes, but was intercepted by Raiders LB Robert Spillane at the Las Vegas 15 with 1:22 left. After a Raiders punt, Wilson's final throw to the end zone was knocked down as time expired.
